Thursday, July 27th, 2006Mark, at Shallow Minded Guide Fishing, reports that the redfish are biting very well. The jetty has been the spot to find reds up to 40 inches. Getting baits to them has been a problem, though, with all the trash fish around.
The ribbonfish are plentiful at the jetties and are perfect offshore baits. They can be caught with rattletraps by anyone looking to stock up.
Reds have also been biting well on the inside in the ICW along the grass lines. They seem to be moving around in small groups, so fishing is slow for a while then a few will bite.
Back on the outside, the spanish mackerel are biting along the Little River tide line, and king mackerel have been hitting along the beach with some big fish finally showing.
Patrick, at Captain Smiley’s Fishing Charters, reports redfishing has been very good this week. Try sight fishing for them in the creeks and the waterway using Berkley Gulps, Johnson spoons, or a lively mullet.
Bigger reds in the 27-29 inch range have been coming off the Little River jetties on live baits. The ribbonfish, however, are making red fishing at the jetty frustrating by tearing up baits.
The jetties have also been productive for flounder (if you can get some live bait down to the bottom).
Steve, at Sea Hunt Charters, reports a slow week thanks to the unforgiving wind. The nearshore areas are producing good catches of sea bass and a few barracudas on top.
As the seas lay down, trips to the Winyah Scarp area will produce the dolphin and wahoo that most are looking for this time of year.

Thursday, July 27th, 2006Jamie, at Reel Bait and Tackle, reports the flounder bite at Yaupon Reef is on fire. As usual, a Carolina-rigged peanut pogy or finger mullet is the best bait. Double-digit numbers of flounder (up to 4 lbs.) are not uncommon right now. Spadefish from 5-7 lbs. are eating strips of jelly ball fished over the [...]
