Berkley Pro Spec

Since their introduction, super-braided lines have become a dominant force in the saltwater market and have been the focus of most of line manufacturers’ R&D dollars. However, monofilament still shines for many saltwater applications, and Berkley is keeping mono on the cutting edge with the introduction of their new Pro Spec line of saltwater mono.

Developed with the input of Berkley pro-staff captains and tournament anglers (hence the name) around the globe, Pro Spec is a premium co-polymer monofilament line with a host of attributes asked for by the professionals.

An extremely high strength-to-diameter ratio makes Pro Spec one of the thinnest monos for its test rating available.

The difference is dramatic enough that anglers can step up in line class with little to no loss of capacity, going from 30 lb. to 50 lb. or 20 lb. on up to 30 lb., offering added strength when pursuing bulldogging saltwater gamefish like amberjacks or grouper. Alternately, they can stick with the same strength line and pack more line on the reel for pelagic speedsters like king mackerel, wahoo, or sailfish.

Pro Spec’s extremely low diameter also gives live baits and artificial lures additional action and make diving lures run deeper since there’s substantially less hydrodynamic drag than thicker lines.

In addition to low diameter, Pro Spec is also extremely supple, which further enhances the action of baits and lures, and, coupled with the low diameter, greatly enhances casting distance.

The new line features excellent knot and impact strength, vital for virtually all saltwater fishing chores.

The strong, low-diameter line is ideal for a variety of saltwater applications, but trolling and surf fishing are two that come to mind where it shines. In the suds, the enhanced casting distance and reduced water drag will let anglers hit far-out bars and hold bottom with less weight.

Trollers, whether pulling live bait, dead, or artificials, will also appreciate lures and baits with more action, equating to more strikes, and Pro Spec has the impact strength to hold up when those strikes come from lightning-fast offshore pelagics headed in the opposite direction of the boat.

Berkley Pro Spec is available in 1 lb. bulk spools from 12-130 lb. test. A pair of colors, hi-vis fluorescent yellow and low-vis ocean blue, let anglers suit the color of the line to the angling situation.

The new line is available currently in local tackle shops, and more information can be found at www.berkley-fishing.com.
