Welcome
It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic. Our goal is to present you with a fun, well organized king mackerel tournament that is family-friendly and competitive for all boat sizes. We also wanted to have a low entry fee (only $200 if you pre-register), numerous payouts (cash awarded to 1st-10th places, as well as 23 & Under payouts), and a captains’ choice format (pick your day to fish).
My partners for this event are Mike Clark (Wild Wing Cafe) and Dane Waggett. Dane has fished regional KMT’s for years, and has wanted to bring a big tournament to the Wrightsville Beach area for a long time. Some of you probably remember the Big Mack KMT that he started years ago.
And I’ve worked with Mike at Wild Wing Cafe for several seasons now, as he’s been the host of the Fisherman’s Post Spring Inshore Challenge since the event moved from Carolina Beach in 2006. Wild Wing Cafe has always been a great location for that tournament’s registration and awards, so we know first hand that you’ll enjoy it as Tournament HQ for the NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic.
For years Mike and Dane had been trying to talk me into partnering with them on a KMT, but I always held them off. Then most of the Wilmington area KMT’s disappeared. The Wrightsville Beach KMT disbanded years ago, and then the Greater Wilmington KMT had to stop back in 2008. Still I wasn’t motivated to jump into the KMT market, but then the Seagate KMT also came to an end.
The Seagate had always been a favorite of mine, so its disappearance was the final push. The Wrightsville Beach area deserves to host its own KMT.
Fisherman’s Post Newspaper covers king tournaments from all over southeastern NC—Carolina Beach, Southport, Ocean Isle, North Myrtle Beach, Topsail, Sneads Ferry, Swansboro, Atlantic Beach—so it didn’t make sense to me that there wasn’t a Wilmington-based event. Thus, the NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic.
I hope you decide to support our efforts to bring a big KMT to the Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington arena. Please enter your boat to fish the event, or sponsor a special weight prize (we’ll be collecting these up until September 17), or donate items for our raffle table, or just come out and watch the weigh-in and buy a t-shirt.
Mike, Dane, and I are excited about the NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic and will be working hard to meet or exceed your expectations.
Thank you,
Gary Hurley
