Berkley Gulp Mantis

Berkley’s Gulp soft baits have become staples in most inshore anglers’ tackle boxes since their introduction, and with good reason—their scent formula has proven virtually irresistible to a wide variety of saltwater gamefish. The company hasn’t rested on its laurels since, constantly refining the line and introducing new colors, styles, and sizes.

The trend continues for 2012, with Berkley offering a brand-new bait, the Mantis Shrimp, new sizes of the Ripple Mullet and Firetail Shrimp, and Gulp Recharge, a fresh shot of the potent Gulp juice to bring new life to old baits.

The Mantis Shrimp, the next iteration of the highly successful Gulp shrimp, features high-action appendages including curly antenna and tail extremities and extra-long angled legs to create substantially more action than the original Shrimp. The increased action serves a pair of fish-attracting purposes—visual attraction through the additional motion, and water displacement to stimulate fishes’ lateral line senses.

The Mantis Shrimp is available in the 3” size and all the popular colors anglers are familiar with from the original, including the popular (and effective) Firetail patterns. Anglers can rig and fish the Mantis Shrimp in any manner they would a live shrimp, and the lure is sure to be highly effective on speckled trout, red drum, flounder, and any other species that counts shrimp as part of its diet.

Speaking of the Firetails, those colors are now available for 2012 in the larger 4” Gulp Shrimp in addition to the 3” model.

An additional size has entered the Gulp Ripple Mullet line, a paddletail lure that features a ridged body and tail that move serious amounts of water to call fish in from a distance. The Ripple Mullet is now available in a 3” version featuring six baits per pack instead of the four that anglers get with the 4” Ripple Mullet, and it includes all the colors anglers are familiar with from the larger style.

Also new for 2012 is Gulp Recharge, a bottle full of the “magic gravy” that gives Gulp baits their remarkable fish-attracting properties. Available in 2 and 8 oz. bottles, the Recharge enables anglers to top off the juice level in their Gulp Alive buckets and bags to maximize their scent dispersion and effectiveness.
