Surf Fishing Series FAQs

SURF SERIES FAQs

What is the one division in the Surf Series?
The entry fee for the Surf Series enters you in the Aggregate Weight Division.

What is the Aggregate Weight Division?
The Aggregate Weight Division winners are determined by totaling up an angler’s points (weight) of up to five fish weighed in over the course of the five qualifying events. The “up to five fish” can be from any event’s leaderboard species (including TWT fish) weighed in during that event; however, no more than one of any one species in any one event can count towards Surf Series points.

For example, if you weigh in more than one bluefish over the weekend in the Pleasure Island Fall Surf Fishing Challenge, only your single heaviest of those bluefish will count towards Surf Series points, but you can have one bluefish, one sea mullet, and one pompano (etc.) from the Pleasure Island Fall Surf Fishing Challenge count towards Surf Series points, and you can have one bluefish count from multiple events (ex. one bluefish from Topsail Spring, one bluefish from Hatteras Surf, and one bluefish from Topsail Fall).

Why do you say “up to five fish”?
It is not required that an angler weigh in at least five fish over the course of the five events that would qualify for the Surf Series–an angler could potentially win or place if they weighed in four or even three heavy fish.

Can anyone enter the Surf Series?
Yes, the Surf Series is open to everyone.

What are the events where anglers can earn points in the Surf Series?
Pleasure Island Team (up to 4 fish can count–bluefish, black drum, sea mullet, and red drum)
Topsail Spring Surf & Pier (up to 5 fish can count–bluefish, trout, black drum, sea mullet, and red drum)
Hatteras Surf Fishing Challenge (up to 5 fish can count–bluefish, black drum, pompano, sea mullet, and red drum)
Pleasure Island Fall Surf (up to 6 fish can count–bluefish, trout, black drum, pompano, sea mullet, and red drum)
Topsail Fall Surf & Pier (up to 5 fish can count–bluefish, trout, black drum, sea mullet, and red drum).

How much is the entry fee for the Surf Series?
The entry fee is $100.

Does the Surf Series entry fee include the five qualifying tournaments’ entry fees, or do you pay the qualifying tournaments’ entry fees plus the one-time Surf Series entry fee?
The Surf Series has its own entry fee, as it is a competition that is now separate from the five standalone events, so you will need to pay the one-time Surf Series entry fee, as well as the entry fees for the individual events you choose to enter to qualify for points.

When do you have to pay the entry fee for the Surf Series?
There is no set deadline for paying the Surf Series entry fee; however, none of your fish in an event can count for points towards the Surf Series unless you have paid your Surf Series entry fee prior to that qualifying event. So you would want to register before you fish in your first event.

When do you have to pay the entry fees for the five qualifying tournaments?
Nothing has changed with the five individual surf fishing events. Those standalone events remain unchanged. You pay the entry fee for each of the tournaments by that tournament’s deadline.

Do you have to pay the Surf Series entry fee to fish in any of the five events?
No. Anyone can fish any of the five surf fishing events. These standalone tournaments remain unchanged—they are open to the public and offer lots of cash and prizes to any angler that enters, whether in the Surf Series or not.

How is the Surf Series entry fee money paid back out to the anglers that enter?
If we have 50 anglers, then we would be paying out a total of $4,000, and the payouts would be as follows:
1st–$1500
2nd–$1000
3rd–$750
4th–$500
5th–$250
Again, these numbers are based on 50 anglers–the payouts will be more if we have more than 50 anglers in the Surf Series, just as they will be less if we have less than 50 anglers.

Do you have to fish all five of the qualifying tournaments?
There is no minimum entry. You don’t have to fish all five events–fish as many events as you wish. Fishing more events, though, gives the angler more possibilities of upgrading weights.
