Barrett McMullan, of Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports that kings are biting well, and they’re getting bigger. This week they hooked several kings weighing over 30 lbs. The regular summer places are producing: 390/390, Jungle, Shark Hole, etc. And there are plenty of pogies now on the beach.
There are lots of bigger cobia in the area, weighing up to 60 lbs. They are at the same places where they’re king fishing. They’ll come up behind the boat, and the trick has been to toss a live eel at them. Dolphin are continuing to move in, but no real reports from the gulf this week.
Grouper fishing has been good. They’ve been hitting 70′ to 90′ of water and using Capt. Mark’s Sardine Chum (or at least some type of chum) to have multiple fish days.
Will, of Ocean Isle Beach Pier, reports good speckled trout fishing if you have live shrimp. A few keeper flounder are being caught, as well as whiting and spots off the bottom rigs. Gotcha plugs off the end should land you plenty of bluefish and some spanish mackerel.
Hunter, of The Rod and Reel Shop, reports that the flounder have finally arrived in good numbers, with most of the fish coming from inside the inlets or up the area rivers. The surf fishing has provided the most variety of fish, with reports of red drum, black drum, pompano, whiting, spots, bluefish, and flounder. Not much ocean fishing due to the weather, but one report from the Tower area was the kings were there and they landed six (the heaviest weighing 28 lbs.).
