Tex, at Tex’s Tackle, reports that he tuna fishing has slowed a little, but there have been some good days offshore. Most of the tuna seem to be in the 30-40 lb. range, and the wahoo have been anywhere from 30-60 lbs. There was a blue marlin caught last weekend near the 200 line in about 250′ of water. Some small dolphin have also been caught, but they key word has been small. Albacore catches have been coming in from the Liberty Ship to about 15 miles offshore. Inshore there have been a few speckled trout. Puppy drum have been in the creeks and surf. He’s heard of a few small flounder, but nothing to get excited about yet. And small blues are now in the surf and waterway.
Dickie, at Tidal Market, reports there have been some puppy drum off of Masonboro Island in the surf. Some have also been in Banks Channel. The jetty has seen some black drum and an occasional speckled trout, and trout have also been caught in the river. Masonboro and Yuteff Island have seen a few sea mullet already. Not much to report on flounder, other than 1 or 2 coming out of Banks Channel. The offshore bite has been dolphin (18-20 lbs.) and wahoo (around 35 lbs.), and two hot spots have been the Same Ole and Swansboro Hole.
Tyler, at Intracoastal Angler, reports that no one has been able to get out to the good tuna and wahoo bite that has been happening. The bite has been up and down the line, from the Same Ole to Big Rock. Inside there a few drum around the docks, but only very few.
Lewis, at Bug-Em Bait Co., reports catches of tuna and wahoo from north of the Same Ole to south of Black Jack. However, the bite has been on so good that it doesn’t really matter-the fish are moving and eating. For a king bite it’s been necessary to go out about 50-55 miles, but that number is less now. Inside there have been a few drum around Hewlett’s creek and in the surf. The jetty has had a few catches of black drum.
Charlie, at Johnnie Mercer Pier, reports that there have been a few blues being caught. There are some in the 1.5 lb. range. There were also a couple of mullet caught; however, they were very small.
