The third kayak fishing tournament of the season hosted by Cape Fear Kayaks was held Saturday, June 25, at Wrightsville Beach. Fishing was tough, with a small craft advisory up due to the howling winds. However, the guys still managed to catch some fish.
Ian Akin, from Wilmington, came out on top with a 14″ flounder caught on a soft plastic. Akin caught his fish off of Wrightsville Beach in the morning.
Ashley Williams, also from Wilmington, took second place with a 13″ flounder. Williams caught the fish in Motts Channel on the high tide.
Ross Bulger, Simba Glass, Keith Roberts, and Todd Maguire also walked away with some great prizes donated by the following sponsors: Tex’s Tackle, Intracoastal Angler, DOA, and Fisherman’s Post.
The participants were pleased with the day even though there was a great deal of wind and some rain. The day started out with a strong NE wind, which makes for a tough day of paddling. Some fish, however, are always back in the creeks if you know where to find them.
This year’s series is a little different than last year, as it is a catch and release tournament. Tape measures and disposable cameras were given to all the participants so that photos could be taken of all the fish. Winners were judged on the length of the fish.
Dave Pugh, owner of Cape Fear Kayaks, was pleased with the turnout for this event and predicts the next month’s tournament at Fort Fisher will bring in some really big reds. He encourages everyone to come out for the rest of the 3rd Annual Kayak Fishing Series every 4th Saturday thru November.
Pugh added, “We appreciate all of the participants for coming out and would like to thank our sponsors for making the tournaments possible.” For more information on Cape Fear Kayak’s Fishing Series, please visit www.capefearkayaks.com.
