Ryan, of Hatteras Jack, reports that panfish like croaker, sea mullet, and spot are making up most of the catch for local surf anglers at present. Shrimp, Fish Bites, and bloodworms on double-drop rigs are fooling the bottom feeders.

Anglers wading around Oregon Inlet are finding action with puppy and yearling drum on soft plastic baits. Some flounder and speckled trout are in the same areas and will pounce on the plastics as well.

Sheepshead are feeding around the pilings of the Bonner Bridge and taking an interest in live fiddler crabs, mussels, and sand fleas.

There’s still a solid red drum bite going on in the sound from Rodanthe to Avon, particularly at night. Most of the reds are falling for cut baits and finger mullet.

Steve, of The Fishin’ Hole, reports that surf casters are hooking spot, croaker, sea mullet, and other panfish while casting shrimp and bloodworms in the local surf. A few puppy drum have been mixed in around Rodanthe and south of Buxton.

The nighttime puppy drum bite in the Pamlico Sound is still going strong, and anglers are hooking solid numbers on cut baits and finger mullet.

Jamie, of Rodanthe Pier, reports that live-baiters landed a 46.6 lb. king mackerel from the pier early in the week.

Plug casters are seeing plenty of action with bluefish and spanish mackerel while working Gotchas.

Sheepshead are feeding around the pilings and biting sand fleas.

Bottom fishermen are hooking some sea mullet and croaker on shrimp.

Butch, of Frank and Fran’s, reports that anglers are seeing a summer mixed bag of panfish like spot, sea mullet, and croaker while fishing the local beachfront. A few big pompano and sheepshead have been mixed in, and shrimp and bloodworms are fooling all the bottom feeders.

Anglers are also hooking some flounder (most small but some keepers) in the surf on Gulp and cut baits.

Bob, of Frisco Tackle, reports that anglers working metal casting lures around Cape Point are hooking some spanish mackerel.

Surf bottom fishermen are connecting with sea mullet and pompano while baiting up with shrimp and sand fleas.

Some flounder are falling for Gulp and strip baits in the surf.

The puppy drum bite remains excellent back in the sound, and anglers are hooking the fish on both artificials and natural baits.

Kyle, of Frisco Rod and Gun, reports that anglers are seeing some sea mullet, pompano, spot, and bluefish along Hatteras Island’s southern beaches. Shrimp, sand fleas, bloodworms, and cut baits on double-drop bottom rigs are fooling the fish.

Anglers fishing inshore in the Pamlico Sound continue to catch big numbers of puppy drum and larger red drum along with some flounder, bluefish, and speckled trout. Most are falling for artificials like soft plastic baits and gold spoons.

The local offshore fleet is still seeing plenty of dolphin action while trolling the blue water off Hatteras Inlet. Good numbers of wahoo and some blackfin tuna are mixed in, and all are falling for ballyhoo and skirted trolling lures. The billfish bite remains good as well, and boats have been releasing decent numbers of sailfish and blue marlin along with the meatfish action.
