Ray Insanti, from OH, with a Dunn Sound red drum he hooked on a live shrimp on a Mission Fishin' jighead while he was fishing with Capt. Mark Dickson of Shallow Minded Inshore Fishing Charters.

Mark, of Shallow Minded Inshore Fishing, reports that the flounder bite picked up last week, and anglers caught good numbers (and plenty of keepers) while drifting along the sandbars inside Little River Inlet. Live shrimp and finger mullet will fool the flatties.

Drifting further out on the jetties has been producing action with some large (30” class) red drum, black drum, speckled trout, bonnethead sharks, sheepshead, and more. Live shrimp are the baits of choice.

Spanish mackerel are finally making a good showing around the inlet, and anglers are hooking them while working the inlet tide line, particularly on a falling tide. Live finger mullet and MirrOlure MirrOminnows have been particularly effective on the spaniards lately.

Patrick, of Capt. Smiley’s Fishing Charters, reports that anglers are finding action with some red and black drum, speckled trout, and a few flounder while fishing the very shallow flats and creeks of the area’s backwaters. Live shrimp are fooling all the fish, and split-shot rigs or light jigheads are the way to go in the shallows.

Fishing the Little River jetties has been producing a mixed bag of bonnethead sharks, black drum, whiting, and a few red drum. Live shrimp are the go-to baits at the jetties, too.

Cory Nance with a 22 lb. black drum that fell for a live shrimp at a deep dock behind Ocean Isle.

Mike, of Cherry Grove Pier, reports that anglers live-baiting from the end of the pier hooked several king mackerel last week.

Plug casters working Gotchas around school of pogies moving by the pier are hooking good numbers of large spanish mackerel (3+ lbs.) and bluefish.

Some flounder are falling for small live baits fished on the bottom.

Anglers baiting bottom rigs up with shrimp are hooking up with some whiting, pompano, and pinfish.

Bryan, of Fish-On Outfitters, reports that the flounder bite in Cherry Grove has gotten even better, and anglers are hooking the fish on live mud minnows and other small live baits. There are huge numbers of small sharks in the area as well, though, and they can make getting baits to the flounder difficult at times.

Some speckled trout are feeding around Sunset Beach Bridge, and live shrimp under floats should strike their fancy.
