Ocean Isle July 22, 2004
Rhett, of Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports that the flounder bite continues to be good. Fish have been coming from Tubbs Inlet, Shallotte River, and Lockwood Folly. More reds showed up this past week. For the reds, try the Little River jetties or outside of Tubbs or Shallotte Inlets. Guys have also been finding a few speckled trout mixed in with the reds.
The king bite has slowed a bit from last week, but last week had area anglers calling it the best king bite they’ve ever seen. There aren’t the same numbers of large kings being caught, but the king fishing is still definitely producing. Try the locations within 25 miles out like the Jungle, Christina Ledge, and the Shark Hole. On a king fishing note, Brant, Barrett, and Rube won the Carteret County Sportfishing Association’s King Mackerel Tournament.
Other than kings, anglers have been picking up a few cobia on the artificial reefs. Once in a while they’ll hook one live bait king fishing. Live bait king fishing has also raised a few sails over the past week. No reports from the gulf stream this week.
Howard, at Ocean Isle Beach Pier, reports that the fishing has been a little slow because of the SW winds. The water isn’t too dirty, but it’s definitely dingy. The flounder action has probably been the best bite on the pier. Fishing a certain tide hasn’t mattered. They’re biting on the rising tide one day and the falling tide the next. Other than flounder, the pier has been picking up some whiting and spots.
