Brant, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports a lot of dolphin around for those targeting them or even for those trolling for kings. They are in the 60 to 80’ depth areas all the way out to the gulf stream. Some good weed lines have recently formed in these areas. One boat managed several over 30 pounds and a couple wahoo.
The Horseshoe has been a good spot for both kings and dolphin, while the Jungle, Shark Hole, and 65 Foot Hole have all been good for kings. Most of the kings are running 8 to 10 pounds, with a few weighing up to 20 pounds.
A few cobia are still being caught, but they are definitely thinning out.
Bottom fishing for grouper is better in 100 to 120 foot of water, while the beeliners are holding in 80 to 100 foot depths.
For those needing live baits, the big pogies have moved off the beach at Oak Island.
Stan, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports the water is boiling in the rivers, but the flounder are still biting. Water temperatures are close to 90 degrees at times, but live pogies are still working on the flounders.
Several flounder this week have been over the 5 pound citation mark. Lockwood Folly River has been a good place to start.
The docks and ledges in the waterway have been good for redfish this week. If you can get on them, they usually will not turn down a live pogy.
Will, at Ocean Isle Pier, reports bottom fishermen catching spots and whiting on shrimp and red worms.
Keeper flounder are biting mud minnows, and live shrimp are producing keeper trout.
Sheepshead are biting barnacles fished close to the pilings.
Plug casters are catching some bluefish. No kings were caught this week, but both cobia and tarpon were hooked and lost.
The water temperature is 84 degrees.
