The Ocean Isle Fishing Center’s Far Out Shoot Out was held over Memorial Day weekend. The blue water event offers captains one day of fishing with two days to choose from. The target species are tuna, dolphin, and wahoo.

“Mr. Happy,” with Capt. Bob Barbour, was the big winner in this year’s event. Barbour walked away with over $10,000 in prize money. “Mr. Happy” was one of only two boats that successfully completed the Carolina Slam of tuna, dolphin, and wahoo.

Their 93 point total came from the following fish: a 49 lb. tuna, an 18 lb. dolphin, and a 26 lb. wahoo. In addition to overall first place, the “Mr. Happy” team also took home the Largest Tuna and the Largest Wahoo prizes. They spent their fishing day in the 100/400 area.

Second place went to “Team Outback/No Worries” and Capt. Scott Childers. Childers had the only other boat with a Carolina Slam. They recorded a 39 lb. tuna, a 21 lb. dolphin, and a 21 lb. wahoo for an 81 point total.

Third place went to the “ShowTime.” Capt. Roger Gales had the tournament’s largest dolphin at 25.35 lbs. The dolphin and a 46 lb. tuna gave “ShowTime” a 71 point total.

This year’s Far Out Shoot Out attracted a record number of boats with 41 entries.

Tournament Director Brant McMullan attributed the success in part to his sponsors: Rampage Yachts, Gregory Poole CAT, the GPS Store, and Outback Steakhouse of North Myrtle Beach.

McMullan also noted, “Thank you also to all the participants and their families for coming to the event and also for cooperating in riding the shuttle.”

The Ocean Isle Fishing Center’s next event is the Jolly Mon King Classic held June 23-25.
