Marsh Works Squilla

Soft plastic baits are some of the most versatile and effective weapons in any inshore angler’s arsenal. Rife with items that will tempt bites from North Carolina’s red drum, speckled trout, striped bass, flounder, and more, Marsh Works has a new line of soft plastics and associated tackle that’s sure to find a home in local tackle boxes.

After success along the Gulf Coast and on the professional red drum tournament trail, Marsh Works’ line of products is now being offered to East Coast anglers. Their catalog features not only a variety of soft plastics, they’ve got the leadheads, spinner and buzz baits, rattle and popping corks, and more to maximize the soft baits’ effectiveness in a variety of situations.

All the plastics are available in a wide selection of colors, including classics like pearl, electric chicken, and glow, and a host of more natural translucent metal flake hues. The company’s soft plastic formula is substantially tougher than most plastics on the market. And this toughness comes without sacrificing any action, so the lures not only hold up to multiple strikes, but they’ve got the movement necessary to draw them as well.

The name of the company’s paddletail grub, the Bayou Thumper (available in 3 and 4” sizes), hints at its Gulf Coast roots, but it will prove equally effective on red drum, flounder, stripers, and more in our state’s coastal waters.

For a more finesse presentation, the company’s Ripple shad is a split-tailed jerkbait that will fish equally well on a jighead or weighted or unweighted worm hook for skinny water reds or any fish in heavy cover.

Their shrimp bait, the Killa Squilla, features eight long legs, a broad tail, and is ideal for a jighead or weedless rig. Fished under a popping cork, it’s sure to call in any speckled trout in the area.

Speaking of corks, the company offers four, all rattlers rigged on heavy-gauge wire with brass and glass beads. The slim and full-bodied oval versions are perfect for most inshore presentations, while the Chugger (a hybrid popping/rattling float) and Buzz (a large oval float with a buzzbait blade in front) will appeal to anglers trying to make a little more noise.

Two jigheads, the Bull Red and the Shorty, offer anglers a choice of the hook length they’d like for their plastic applications. The heads share premium, black nickel hooks (larger on the Bull Red), 3D eyes, and extremely durable finishes in six colors.

The Bayou Thumper and Bayou Buzz, heavy-duty R-bend spinner and buzzbaits, feature the Bull Red jigheads and offer anglers an excellent way to call more attention to their soft plastics in dingy water or low-light conditions.
