George, at Carolina Bait and Tackle, reports that the wind and weather has disrupted the fishing, but there have been a few fish caught. The bad weather hasn’t kept guys from finding some flounder, with good catches reported from the Turning Basin and the Haystacks. There are also still a few speckled trout coming from the Haystack area.
The king fishing has been slow, as evident in the number of kings caught during the ABKMT.
Surf fishermen are managing to pick up a few blues, spots, and sea mullet.
Paul, at Freeman’s Bait and Tackle, reports that due to the weather the king fishing has been fairly slow. The ABKMT is evidence of this with over 300 boats weighing in just 70 fish.
Fishing for blues has been outstanding. There are plenty of 1-3 lb. blues running around. The finger mullet are also everywhere. At times the blues have been seen pushing the finger mullet up on the beach.
Guys are also landing big spanish (4-6 lbs.). The way to go is live baiting finger mullet on modified king rigs.
As for flounder fishing, the guys who know what they’re doing have been catching big ones. The heaviest of the week was a 10 lb. fish. Guys who don’t know what they’re doing have been finding lots of 12-13″ fish.
And there continues to be good drum fishing in the backwaters.
Jaz, at Sportsman’s Pier, reports that some days are good and some are bad. The good days have been providing a good mix and variety.
The blues are coming from plugging and bottom fishing. A couple of days had the big schools of jumping mullets swimming by, and there were big blues under the mullets.
Otherwise, they have been picking up a few spanish, flounder, pompano, and puppy drum. Guys who target sheepshead are doing well, including one guy who landed 18 in a trip.
Ken, at Triple “S” Pier, reports that they’ve been catching a lot of small blues, weighing from .75 to 1.5 lbs. Go with cut bait on the bottom or the gold hook and straw rigs. They’ve also seen some nice-sized spots, some croakers, and some sea mullet.
Guys have been landing a few legal flounder over the past week, with maybe a dozen or so over the last few days.
The puppy drum are hitting in the surf, with most around 15 inches. The pompano that have been caught are small, and some sheepshead, including a 5 lb. fish, have been caught recently.
Joe, at Joe’s Pro Bait and Tackle, reports that not many people fished this week due to high winds and gas prices.
Inshore, some speckled trout were caught up Core Creek, particularly around the 101 Bridge. These fish were running up to 5 pounds. There were also some good catches of red drum up around the Haystacks.
