Pole-Kat Krystal Minnows

Drawing on his experience as a tackle shop owner, Southport’s Paul Westbrook decided he could improve on a classic lure that NC pier anglers have been using to fool spanish mackerel, bluefish, and a host of other predators for decades. After plenty of research and design, Pole-Kat Lures Krystal Minnow was born.

Westbrook felt he could make a more realistic baitfish imitation, and in the Krystal Minnow, he’s done it. The lure is designed to imitate a glass minnow, the favored food of many nearshore pelagics. The lure’s translucent, holographic body succeeds in this regard, mimicking the iridescent stripe and clear body that earned glass minnows their name.

A recessed, lifelike, three-dimensional eye adds to the lure’s realism and predator appeal, and along with a textured gill slit, gives it the impression of a frightened baitfish even before anglers make a cast.

Westbrook’s first fishing trip with the new lure at the Outer Banks produced an 11 lb. striped bass on his third cast and the confidence that, in fact, he had improved upon a classic bait.

Seven years later, anglers can purchase Krystal Minnows in 24 models featuring a choice of six head colors, glow or clear tail inserts, and red or gold treble hooks.

While they’re certainly deadly on spanish mackerel, stripers, speckled trout, bluefish, Krystal Minnows will tempt bites from other species one might not expect. Their side-to-side action is highly effective on dolphin, and they make excellent vertical jigging lures as well, perfect for black sea bass and other bottom dwellers.

Handmade by Westbrook in Southport, Krystal Minnows are available throughout the U.S. through his website, www.pole-katlures.com, and a network of dealers.
